Ane Speaks – she probably needs a therapist

Yesterday, Ane asked me if we were “going to go anywhere today” other than church for my Bible Study group. I gaily replied that since it was Tad’s birthday, we were going to go to the mall to have his picture taken at the portrait studio, and then probably go out to dinner at what Resiss and I have decided will now be called “Crimson Bird” in mixed company (i.e. young children who really love going there all the time).

I swear than Ane’s blue eyes turned green. “Mommy, Tad had a birthday last year. He doesn’t need another one,” she said flatly.

Did I mention that we’re working through jealousy issues here? Ane is starting to get very antagonistic toward Tad about everything that’s been going on, especially now that he’s starting to crawl around and isn’t acting wounded anymore. She stepped on his face on Monday when she was picking on him – and immediately got a time-out. Understanding that he can’t walk away from her at the moment, so she’s going to get in trouble if she picks a fight with him… it may be too much for her four-and-a-half year old brain to process. Maybe she needs a therapist. Or maybe some more one-on-one time with her mother or father.

And somehow, I don’t think her warped logic will come to mind when her birthday rolls around. I wonder why…

Maybe she just needs a non-violent way to get her energy out (karate or gymnastics might be guiding her in the wrong direction right now). Get her in a dance class or a soccer team!

How great that she expresses the jealousy through speech as well as action! At least you know WHY she is doing what she is doing.
I sure enjoy reading your day-to-day adventures. Makes me wish I had journaled when mine were small. What a treasure for your kids to read someday!
