A telling-off moment

Tad has attitude. Sometimes, it’s a little too much for his own good.

The kids were outside playing in the backyard before dinner yesterday – the weather, though dreary earlier in the day, became much clearer and sunnier in the afternoon – and Tad was scolded by the Webmaster for mistreating some toys. Apparently, he’s skinny enough to fit through a basketball hoop if he lays the whole thing down on the ground so he can get into it.

As the Webmaster turned his back, Tad shouted at him – something along the lines of “No, YOU stop it!” I didn’t catch it clearly, but I could definitely hear the volume increase and the defiance involved – and if there is one thing the Webmaster really, truly hates, it’s the kids backtalking at him.

Tad was immediately back in the house and on a time-out, with much wailing and gnashing of teeth. After his three minutes were up and the timer was beeping, the Webmaster picked Tad up, who was apologizing. “Sowwy, Daddy, I sowwy,” he said, clinging to the Webmaster’s neck.

The Webmaster patiently reminded Tad that talking back is very rude, but as he was saying this, I caught his eye. I must have had a very amused smile on my face, because the Webmaster paused as he was talking to Tad and said, “What?”

“Did you ever envision that there would be a time where you’d actually be scolding him for talking back?” I asked.

The Webmaster smiled back at me, hugged Tad, and sent him back outside to play.

We’ve come a long, long way.
