Another sign we watch too much Food Network

Ane absolutely LOVES any and all Food Network competitions involving cake or candy. And yes, I have been known to tape them so she can watch them with me (they sometimes air after her bedtime). So she has it in her head that I could be in one of the competitions. Um, no.

Last night, I was making a rhubarb coffeecake for the fun of it – the weather’s mild enough that baking right now isn’t an issue, and I had rhubarb picked from Grandma’s yard to use up. Ane got all excited that I was making a cake, even if it was one I wasn’t going to decorate it with frosting. I promised her a piece for breakfast this morning, which made her happy.

“Mommy, could you make cake on Food Network? Pleeeease?” she begged.

“Ane, that’s not the kind of cake I’m making right now. And those bakers are professionals, kiddo – Mommy just bakes for fun.”

“Well, could we pretend that you’re on Food Network? There won’t be any judges, and you won’t have to move your cake to the judging table, so could we just pretend? Pleeeease???

I smiled. “All right, we can pretend.”

She grinned back, and then got serious. “Okay, then, your time starts – NOW!”
