Weekend Wrap-Up

Webmaster here, filling in for his exhausted wife.

We had a lovely time on Saturday when my folks came to visit. As usual, Ane stole Nana away to her bedroom — which she recently cleaned without prompting — for tea parties and dollies. Tad loves his Papa and, upon his sitting down, welcomed him with his usual flying tackle. My folks treated us to lunch and most of us ate outside on the deck in the beautiful, Northwest August sun.

They shared some good news about my old home county-level Babe Ruth Baseball league that won the 2009 Cal Ripken World Series. They also brought a copy of my grandmother’s obituary. I knew she spent 30 years working as a civilian in the Air Force, but I never knew that she had also served in the Navy prior to that time. My father now adds a third service flag from his immediate family. Sometimes I feel like I missed the boat, literally.

Yes, dear, I’ll stop self-flagellating now.

Sunday was very lazy. Only a few errands to run and no commitments. Deanna had time to rest, the kids watched some Sesame Street Old School episodes, and worked a little on some prep for our church’s pastor search web site project. Okay, and I played some Far Cry 2.

Around 5:30 pm came a call from an older couple in our church who were having terrible virus/malware problems. I packed up my gear, left, and got there a bit after 6 pm. I didn’t get back until 9:30! Nasty piece of work that bug was, and I didn’t have the option of flattening their system.

I was generously compensated for my time, but this sort of thing has always been a labor of love. Still, 3 weeks until I receive a paycheck… every bit helps. That, and these last 6 months of unemployment have humbled me somewhat and made me a better receiver of gifts, regardless of whether I feel I deserve such things.

We look forward to what is essentially our family’s last week of summer together. Next Monday I start work at my new job and two days later, Ane starts kindergarten. And a week after that, Tad starts his second year of preschool.

This is it folks! Last week of summer! Time to wrap up that summer reading!

Ressis: it’s updated now! At least through June. I’ll have July done in the next hour or so, followed by what we have of August.
