Rewards

Tad’s potty chart has 21 boxes on its grid. Every time he uses the potty here at home, he gets a sticker. Two for number two (ha ha).

He’s filled out two charts so far. When the chart is finished, he turns them in for a prize of some kind. This has helped us get away from the “getting a treat” every single time he uses the potty.

His first “prize” was a small plush EVE to go with his small plush WALL-E. He was really excited to get it and spent a lot of time re-enacting the movie for me. I put on the soundtrack to help him along.

His second “prize” was a new pair of underwear. And lest you think that this was no prize at all, it was SHARK underwear. Yes, I had a pair of shark underwear in the next size up (which he’s starting to grow in to) hidden away for him. Thank you, Gymboree. They had an entire summer line of sea life clothes which, of course, had matching underwear. He LOVED the shark underwear, and actually wore it yesterday.

I have a pair of whale underwear hidden away, too. Shhh… that may be his next prize.

No one should ever underestimate the power of patterned underwear. Little Cousin wears Disney Princess underwear and when she was first training, she suddenly shouted “Princess Poo-Poo!” I got her to the potty and she did it! Even now, she likes to show off her underwear (“Look, it’s Aurora!”) to people. That one we need to work on.

I can swear that cartoon underwear worked 50 years ago too! But I can’t remember what the patterns were. Sad.
