I need ideas

So, Ane is done reading the Ramona series.  And we just finished the latest Clementine book from the library (with many thanks to our friend C. the librarian for recommending the series).

Now I need help.  Is there any other series or books out there that anyone thinks is appropriate for a six and a half year old who will be starting first grade next week?  I was considering The Boxcar Children series, but maybe we should start The Chronicles of Narnia instead?

Any suggestions for me?

Oh, and if you happen to be the parents of Little Cousin, Littler Cousin, Belle, Berry, Beth or Baby Bee (her blog name until she is born) – your Obachan needs book ideas for your girls’ Christmas gifts (and since I do Obachan’s Christmas shopping, this means I need ideas).  Hint, hint.

And if anyone knows of a children’s series that features a shark as the main character, I should probably know about that, too.

I never read The Chronicles of Narnia myself, but I LOVED The Boxcar Children. There’s always the Nancy Drew series. I know I read The Babysitters club a lot, but I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade when I started those… Another good set, albeit short, is the collection of The American Doll stories. The only one I *might* bypass for now, is Addy’s series, only because that one deals with primarely Slavery I think. (Though, I’ve only personally read Falicity, Kirstin, Molly, Samantha, and Addy… I never read Josephina, but I think that one is all right for that age range, too. And I don’t know if there are any new ones or not, either…) I’m asking my mom if she remembers anything else… will let you know if she does. =)

Remembered a few more – Mom loved the Bobsey Twins growing up, but she thinks they may have been a little older. Another one that I LOVED was the Sweet Valley Twins. I think that’s the “younger” version of Sweet Valley High. Again, I can’t remember exactly how old I was when I read these books but yeah… If nothing else, maybe they’re a good idea for when she gets another year or two older… (I’m TERRIBLE with ages from when I was a kid.)

Has Ane read Junie B. Jones? Little Cousin’s teacher will be reading those aloud to the class this year. I think the Chronicles of Narnia would be a good choice, since Mom read them to us eons ago.

As for my kids for Christmas, I’ll send you an email with info. And as for blog names, “Littler” Cousin needs a new one, you could call her “Care Bear” since that’s a nickname I cal her. And Baby Bee could be “Bonnie” or maybe “Bumble Bee.”

As a first grader, I really liked the Betsy Books by Carolyn Haywood. Not as complex as Ramona perhaps and I’m pretty sure on a lower reading level, but really sweet. The first one is B is for Betsy.
