Water Baby

Yesterday was a very rainy day.  Since we usually go swimming on Thursday evenings, it wasn’t going to affect us… but I thought Auntie might have a little free time in her schedule due to the weather.  Games and practices are very icky on soggy fields.

So, I borrowed Auntie and took ALL THREE kids to the open swim!  I really have to have another pair of hands with me in order to do this.  Obviously, Rerun can’t be on his own, and while I am confident that the other two will behave themselves in the water, getting all three out, showered, and dressed by myself is simply impossible.  Not happening.

My plan was to get there on time (we did), and then take Rerun out after 40 or 45 minutes to get him bathed, dressed in his pajamas, strapped into his stroller, and get myself dried and dressed before Auntie brought Ane and Tad into the locker room to clean up.

I didn’t count on Rerun being a total water baby.

He LOVED the pool.  LOVED it.  I have never seen a baby take to water like that.  He had a huge grin on his face nearly the whole time.  While he definitely wanted me to be with him, he was not clingy at all.  I was holding him under the arms, facing me, as he “swam” while I walked backwards in the pool.  He was getting water in his face, occasionally lapping a mouthful, and naturally knew how to make himself float.

He was kicking his legs in the water to make himself move.

Who IS this boy???

I flipped him over to try a back float… and as I did that, the world’s goofiest, most blissful grin spread over his face.  His eyes closed and he just relaxed into my grip as he rested in the water.

Then he saw a ball and HAD TO HAVE IT, and that made his night.  A big red ball and a pool to play in.  Apparently, that makes for a GREAT night.

He really didn’t want to leave the pool, but he didn’t fuss when I took him out 45 minutes later to shower and get dressed.  I had him all strapped in by the time Auntie brought Ane and Tad in to shower, with only one minor mishap – he had swallowed a smidge too much water and urped on his clean onesie.  Fortunately, I had a clean backup in the diaper bag that fit him.

We stopped for Frostys at Wendy’s on the way back to Auntie’s house, and Rerun crashed in the car.  He woke up enough to nurse at the house, and then stayed awake until we got home, but was quite ready to go to bed.  After the energy he expended in the pool, I’m not surprised.

I have another little fishy on my hands… or maybe he’s a baby shark.  He does bite, you know.  But I’ve never seen him so excited and happy.

Many thanks to Linda for sending us the small swim diapers – that’s what he wore in the pool!  And I think we’ll be using them again very soon!

Sounds like a great evening. There are so many little kids who scream in the water or won’t go near. Maybe seeing the other two convinced him it was a good thing.
I’m so glad you have a pool to take them to. We only had beaver dams on Highland Creek.
