Tad Reads

Every couple of weeks, we go app shopping for the iPad.  Most apps are pretty inexpensive (a good selection are around $1), and we had bought one called Math Bingo for Ane a while ago.  She really enjoyed it, so we purchased its counterpart, Word Bingo.

Where Math Bingo makes you solve math problems, and then select the correct answer on the bingo board, Word Bingo works on sight reading.  The game says the word aloud, then you have to pick the correct word off the bingo board.

Ane is doing quite well at the “first grade” level, and is enjoying this game.  Her biggest hang-up is actually finding the answer on the board.  In true Ane fashion, she will yell at the game when she’s flustered.  “It’s not on here!  I can’t find it!  How am I supposed to – oh, there it is.”

She was playing the game for the first time on Monday, with Tad watching over her shoulder.  The word was “him.”  Ane could not find it and began her rant.  “Where IS it??  I don’t see it on here AT ALL!!”

Tad casually leaned over his sister’s shoulder, and tapped “him” on the bingo board without saying a word.

I busted out laughing.

And then I discovered that this was not a fluke.

I set Tad up as his own player on the game, at the “pre-primer” level.  And he is… reading.  He will often tab the “repeat” button to hear the word again, and use the process of elimination to find the right word, and he does make mistakes.  But not too many.  He is reading the words to play the game.

I showed Friend how he was doing this after piano lessons yesterday, and she just smiled and said, “It’s so nice to be right!”  She predicted, long ago, that Tad would be a much quicker study at reading than I believed he would be.

I’m glad she was right, and I was wrong.

“It’s nice to see something come easily to him, isn’t it?” Friend commented, watching him play Word Bingo.

I couldn’t agree more.
