Funnyman

Tad definitely possesses a sense of humor.  The better part is, he possesses a sense of humor that is easily understood by other people.  (This, again, is one of those rarer qualities among autistic children – they often do not “get” what makes other people laugh.)

If you ever watch America’s Funniest Videos with him, you’ll see what I mean.  He enjoys the slapstick.  But he’s also begun to find that he has the capacity to make other people laugh.

Earlier this week, the kids got doughnut holes for breakfast.  When Tad found out what was for breakfast, he exclaimed “Doughnuts?  I love doughnuts!”  (a scripted line straight from Tokyo Mater, for those of you familiar with that cartoon) and then went dancing into the kitchen singing, “Doughnuts, doughnuts, doughnuuuuts!”

The singing phrase was totally his own (I think), and I just shook my head.  “Tad, you are funny,” I told him.

He grinned at me and said, “F-U-N-N-Y.  Funny!”

I have a comedian AND a spelling bee contestant on my hands.
