The World is Full of Letters

Rerun, my adorable little roughed-up guy, has become obsessed with the alphabet.  He has been for some time, but we’re starting to reach the point where total strangers are starting to notice.  It’s hard not to notice when a two-and-a-half year old is reciting the alphabet LOUDLY from his seat in the cart at the grocery store… and reading labels off items, letter by letter.

“B! E! A! N! S!”

“B! R! E! A! D!”

“G! L! A! D! W! A! R! E!”

However, it’s not just the grocery store.  He’s starting to read letters off signs while we’re driving.  He has to read the back of the neighbor’s truck every morning on the way home from the bus stop – “T! O! Y! O! T! A!”  If it’s in capital letters, he has to read it.  It’s like watching Helen Keller realize that every thing has a name, but with Rerun, he’s discovering that every word is made up of letters.

And then it began to invade his bedtime story.

One of his current favorites is Dinosaur vs. The Potty, by Bob Shea (who also wrote another of Rerun’s favorites, Dinosaur vs. Bedtime).  It’s a fun story, but it started taking forever to read… because every time “DINOSAUR WINS” is in the book, it’s in caps, and guess who has to take the time to read the letters?

Fortunately, the Webmaster usually pulls bedtime story shift with the boys, while I read to Ane (we’re currently in the middle of Anne of Green Gables now and she loves it), but it’s very funny to hear “W! I! N! S! I!” come through the wall.  He adds an extra “I” on the end because he thinks an exclamation point is a letter I, upside down.

This boy is endlessly entertaining.  And his owie is healing up nicely.

The pictures are so cute with dad smiling. Rerun must be so entertaining! Time for the sounds of those letters?

That kid was cracking me up. He couldn’t let a page go by without spelling something out.

Love the pictures of Eric and him! Rerun will have the books memorized and will
be “reading” them to Eric soon!
