Be Three!!!

Dear Rerun,

It’s your third birthday today, and while you have a concept of what a birthday party should be like, the fact that it is YOUR birthday is a little lost on you.  We’ve been working on telling you that you are three now, and you seem quite pleased about it, even if you’re not sure what that completely means.

But that’s okay.  You understand a lot more than we think sometimes, even if you don’t get the whole idea of a “birthday” yet.

You also don’t get that we’re about to turn your world completely upside down in just a few more weeks with the arrival of a new baby brother.  I think you do understand that there is something happening, though, because you have been very Mama-oriented here at home for the last month.  However, you take your schedule in stride, and it makes me smile to see you trotting up to Grandma and Gichan’s house, knocking on the door, and either saying “trick or treat!” or “Merry Christmas!” when you enter, and then have no problem hanging out there while I go to doctor appointments or take Tad to therapy.

And you are so bright – you know your entire alphabet, can write about six different letters already, can count to twenty, can sing entire songs (including “Call Me Maybe”), and know the entire cast of Veggie Tales, the characters of Star Wars, and all the major characters in the DC Universe.

You are stinking hilarious, kid.

You make me laugh in so many ways, because you are just that funny.  You are still such a cheesy little ham, and you bring such joy to everyone around you.  You are the delight of my heart, the apple of your dad’s eye, the love of your big sister’s heart, and the pain in your brother’s… rear end.

I had never truly imagined what it would be like to have two sons (and soon there will be a third, oh my), and I certainly thought that the age gap between you and Tad would mean that I would have more time to prepare for this level of sibling rivalry and fighting, even with Tad’s autism.  Apparently not.  Whatever he does, you want to do.  Whatever he likes, you like.  Whatever he’s getting into, you want.  And vice versa.  These last few months have certainly been a struggle of wills between the two of you… and one contest that I don’t see ending anytime soon.

And you are becoming more and more independent.  You want to do things on YOUR terms – like when you’ll come to dinner, be picky about food, get demanding, having tantrums over more “important” things instead of small things.  You can be frighteningly agreeable and obedient – which always shocks the socks off Daddy and me – and you can also be staunchly stubborn and growly.

In short, you are a full-fledged toddler.

I don’t think I can tell you just how much I love you.  I hope to prove to you that, even with your comfortable little world teetering on the edge of a major change, I still love you because you are YOU, Rerun.  You have given me so much hope and laughter and joy over the last three years.  It seems to have passed in a blink of an eye, and yet you seem to have always been in my heart.

Happy third birthday, my adorable, lovable, Super-toddler Jedi Veggie Bat-boy.  (Or whatever you are watching/playing with at the moment.)

Love,
Mama
