Ane Bakes Cake

And yet another piece of Ane news…

She has progressed into baking cakes.

Ane and her cake

Friend shared her family’s recipe for Kentucky Butter Cake a while ago, and Ane has decided that it is one of her absolute favorite cakes.  It’s also an absurdly simple cake to make, so long as you have all the ingredients on hand.  I handed Ane each ingredient, but she did most of the measuring and the mixing (I did make her mix the wet ingredients first, but apparently that’s not even really necessary with this recipe).  My biggest contribution was greasing and flouring the bundt pan, and running the stove to make the glaze.

It was Sunday dessert, and it was delicious.

I predict that in a couple of years, she will be saying to me, “Hey, can I make a cake?” and I will not have any trouble saying “Yes” and letting her do it all by herself.

A couple of other things about Ane…

1) Your eyes do not deceive you, that is a pink streak in her hair.  We went to the hair salon for their annual “Pink for the Cure” night and Ane got a pink hair extension put in by Rae, our stylist.  (She also got her nails painted and an up-do, which she enjoyed a lot.)  I’m letting her keep the extension in for now.  Because I’m a cool mom.  (I see my sisters laughing at me.)

2) She just said to me yesterday evening, “Mom, seriously… I think I’m outgrowing princesses.”  How on earth has she gotten this old?  She’s turning TEN in just a couple of months, and she is already getting very excited about what I’ve told her she can do for her tenth birthday… she can finally get her ears pierced.  I got to do this at ten years old, and I made her wait, too… quite a while, as a matter of fact.

I don’t have a little girl anymore.

I’m not sure I’m ready to have a ten-year-old in the house.

Her great-great-grandmother Eliza Hale (from Letcher County, KY) would be very proud of her making the Kentucky Butter Cake.
