Fourth Fun

Having the Fourth of July on a Friday made for an extended weekend for everyone!  The boys and I took it easy in the morning while I finished making dessert, but the Webmaster and Ane were at our city’s annual parade, which our church helps manage.

Once they got home, we prepared for our potluck at Grandma and Gichan’s house.  We brought the potato salad, lemonade, and dessert.  I got the recipe for a cookie “cake” from Danny and John’s mom, and this was the result…

After I got a good picture of the kids at home (or, the best picture I could get) …

… we headed out!  We had a very traditional barbecue (hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwursts) with Grandma, Gichan, Auntie, Obachan, Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa, with a greeting from Hawaii on Skype from the Major and Q-Bee and the B Squad, who have now moved to the Aloha State for the next few years!  When dinner was over, we didn’t have to do much convincing to get the kids home to light off fireworks.

Now, Rerun has had a real fear of fireworks in the past.  I knew we wouldn’t be able to fix it all at once, but we coaxed him to participate in the easiest “firework” there is – Pop-Its.

He started to enjoy it.

But when the sparklers came out, he drew the line.  Oh, well.  BUT, he didn’t hide from them,  either – he just adamantly refused to go near them.  This was a big improvement over last year.  He also liked the colored smoke bombs, so I think we’ll eventually get him warmed up to fireworks over time.

The older two are HUGE sparkler fans.

And interestingly, Thumper enjoyed the bright lights and didn’t seem put off by all the noise and crackling and booming.

It was a very successful Fourth of July!

Never argue with a healthy fear of fire.
