Cookie Baker

I must have been around Ane’s age when I started baking cookies by myself.  Gichan’s favorite has always been chocolate chip, and I remember that being the first cookie recipe that I made all by myself.  I was crushed when my cookies were spreading like crazy, and were like lacy pools of dough studded with chocolate chips.

I also remember Grandma then going over what a recipe means when it says “packed” brown sugar.  I had packed that sugar in until it was a half-cup sized hockey puck.  Oops.

Mindful of my own errors – and I see you, Ressis, saying “baking SODA and baking POWDER” – but knowing she has to make some of her own mistakes, too, Ane baked cookies by herself on Saturday.  I was around and we did talk about measurements and things like that (she was not happy with me that I made her do MATH FIRST and double the recipe), but she handled most everything herself.

The cookies were yummy.  Her brothers acted as official taste testers and gave them the thumbs up.

I think the Webmaster deserves a few cookies now, too.  As you may remember, he was laid off back in August.

He was offered a new job yesterday and he ACCEPTED!!!

He starts in a couple of weeks (long enough to get the cross country season over and a few more of the kids’ appointments and commitments out of the way) in a 6 month contract-to-hire position.  He will be back working in downtown Seattle, so that part of his work routine will stay very similar.

It is a huge relief to know that this season is coming to an end.  But I think the kids will really miss having him around.

You’ve had a few incidents with baking soda and you also messed up boxed stuffing when you nearly tripled the amount of water needed for two boxes. What would you do without me to remember when and how you screw up?
