Rest In Peace, Aunt Mary

We here at the Corner Haus received expected, and terribly sad, news on Saturday night.  The Webmaster’s Aunt Mary, who read the blog and commented occasionally, passed away after a brief and bitter battle with cancer of the head and neck.

The diagnosis was a surprise, but the initial reports were hopeful.  Surgery was successful, and radiation treatment followed.  But then the cancer came back in early March, and this time surgery was considered impossible.  Hospice came in and every effort was made to keep Aunt Mary as comfortable as possible.  The Webmaster and Ane made a visit to see her in late March, and then we all drove down three weeks ago to see her, knowing for certain that it would be the last time that the boys would see her, at least.  It ended up being the last time for all of us.

Ane has taken Aunt Mary’s death very hard.  This is the first time that she has been old enough to properly process what death and grieving really means.  None of the boys are old enough or mature enough to understand, so I think she feels that her sadness is setting her apart from them.  We take comfort and joy in the knowledge that Aunt Mary is no longer in pain, and is in heaven with the Lord, and also reunited with her own parents.  The hard part is left to those of us still here on earth, to cope with our own grief and sense of loss.

Aunt Mary loved to sing on earth, and I am certain she is singing in heaven now.  And I am certain that we will see her again.
