Breaking up is easy to do

Ane has been obessed lately about getting married. I blame her Disney princess fixation. With all of these princesses getting married and living happily ever after at the end of each story, it’s little wonder that it’s been on her mind.

Anyway, she has been telling me that she is going to marry her brother. I tried to explain the illegality of the scenario, but YOU try telling that to a three-year-old and have it make sense to them. However, she has had some kind of “understanding” with the Brain for a while. She brought it up when he and Head were over here on Monday.

“Brain, we going to get married,” Ane said to him. It was a statement of fact, not a question.

“Um, I don’t think so,” the Brain said in his usual, high-pitched voice. “I’m going to marry Amanda, if I still like her when I’m all grown up.”

While I suffered in silent fits of laughter, Ane took this in stride, and didn’t mention marriage for the rest of the day. When I told Friend about it, she told me that Amanda is a little girl at their church who is just finishing kindergarten. Ah, an older woman… apparently, the Brain is just like his father. 😉

The funniest part of this story is that Friend told me that once the Brain had “decided” on his new love, he said to Head, “You like Ane, don’t you, Head?” In effect, he was trying to pawn Ane off onto his younger brother.

I don’t think Ane has paid attention to the supposed brother-swap. She still has her eye on L. at church. As her social circle expands into preschool, it will be interesting to see how she continues to relate to boys. In the meantime, she is still trying to rule both the Brain and Head with an iron fist – and mostly succeeding, unless there is parental intervention.

Wow, this is more confusing than a daytime soap.
