Employed once more!

The Webmaster has a job again!!!!!!!

I won’t go into too many details, because frankly, I don’t quite understand it all myself. But the Webmaster has a 4 month contract with a small company in downtown Seattle, and if everything goes well in the contract period, then he will most likely be hired on. We will have to see how this all shakes out, especially the commute. He plans on taking the bus (the company will help him pay for the bus pass), and hopefully the hours stay consistent enough on a daily basis that it won’t be a problem.

This will be a change for me and the kids, too, because we’ve gotten used to having Daddy around. Though it really is best for all of us that he go back to work – not only because he gets paid, but because it’ll put some structure back into our schedules. The kids seem to think that every day has been Saturday for the last month since he was laid off, and I know it’s driven me nuts. It will also be a change because I can’t just decide to say “let’s take lunch to Daddy at his work” and then pack up the kids and go. Too far, no parking. Neither can I call on him to come home early (except in a true emergency), because he’ll be at the mercy of the bus schedule. So, like I said, it’ll be a big adjustment for all of us.

At the same time, my mother is contemplating going back to work. She worked part-time for over 15 years for an OB/GYN as office manager, bookkeeper, and substitute nurse. He closed the practice last December, and since then she has been finishing up the books, billing and taxes from home. But it has really wound down over the last few months, and the accounts will get turned over to a collection company at the end of the year, and that will be it. While my dad has loved having her at home (making bread and other yummy things) and she loves being at home (making bread and being Grandma), it would be a bit of a pinch to have her not working at all. So, she interviewed last week with a small company that is run by someone at our church who is looking for a bookkeeper/financial manager. She would only work a couple of days a week, very part-time (less than 20 hours), but doesn’t seem that enthused about the whole idea of working again. I think deep down, she really just wants to be the at-home mom that she was when I was little, making bread and playing with the grandkids. But having a teenager at home can be expensive, especially when said teenager plays softball. We’ll see what happens.

Me? I’m just trying to get this stamp thing in the black, instead of operating on “venture capital”, as the Webmaster says. I’m going to be making and selling Christmas cards this holiday season, along with selling the stamps and supplies at stamp camps. The Captain has already put in an order – once I make some samples, he will pick one. Then I’ll send his order to him, and he’s going to mail them from Iraq (free mail in combat zones). Maybe this will get me jump-started a little.

In the meantime, I have a full-time job as a potty trainer. Not going so well, but some days are better than others. At least the Munchkin hasn’t had a bloody nose for the last few days. Thank heaven for small favors.

Great news about the Webmaster’s new job! I’m sure you’ll all slot into new schedules before you know it. Good luck too on the stamping and cardmaking!
