Late nights with tired kids

This week is Sports Camp at our church – our version of Vacation Bible School. Both Ane and Tad are attending this year (the first time for Tad), so it’s been nice for the Webmaster and I to have time to ourselves every evening this week.

It’s weird.

It’s a great deal – for the price of the camp, we get about 3 hours to ourselves every night this week. But still, it feels funny to have that much free time together. We’ve mostly spent the time shopping at stores that the kids either hate or we hate taking them to – Cost Plus World Market comes to mind. After shopping in there, we had a good laugh recounting all the things we would have said to the kids if they had been with us. There was a lot of “get back here!” and “don’t touch that!” mentioned by both of us.

The one down side it that it makes for a very late day with the kids. Camp starts at 5 pm, so it’s hard to get them up from a nap (which they NEED) and feed them a real dinner before we need to be there. So we’ve been eating bigger-than-normal lunches and then having a bit of supper before bed. It’s been working okay, but it does make for a later-than-usual, past-bedtime evening with the kids.

Still, I think the benefits are worth it. They’re having fun and coming home tired. We’re getting time alone. It’s a win-win!

Sounds about like our experience with the meals. It does make for longer evenings since kids are getting into bed closer to 10p instead of 9p. Big J was happy to get his pin though.

As long as they sleep well at night it is all worth it.
