Ane, Apprentice Chef

Ane, who is a Food Network devotee, wants to cook.  And bake.  And generally be capable in the kitchen.

“Good!”  I said.

So the plan is to introduce her to some simple recipes, and let her learn to cook them.  As she becomes more comfortable, and acquires those basic cooking skills, she can begin to assume some responsibility in the kitchen.  (Which also means that I have to let go and let her get comfortable using knives and the like.)

I introduced her to the relatively simple dish (and kid favorite) of Ham and Noodles.

Dicing the ham

We have been discussing the concept of “mise en place” (thank you, Bobby Flay), so she got all of her ingredients assembled before we even started boiling water for the noodles.

Chopping the green onion

After she was all prepped, I hovered in the background as we both read the recipe and went through each step.

Adding the cream

This dish is done pretty quickly, and is pretty foolproof.  It also doesn’t hurt that Tad loves it and has been known to eat thirds of this particular meal.

All done!

Eventually, I want all the kids to become proficient in the kitchen.  But I have to start with the oldest (and the one that I can trust with a knife), and I must say, she is quite an apt and willing pupil!

Some day the nice boys will prefer a good cook over a beauty queen! Good work, Ane!
