First Date

Today is the seventh anniversary of my first date with the Webmaster. Our first date was 14 hours long. Yes, really!

We had been friends for years (having been introduced to each other by Girl With Flat Hat in the summer of 1994 when he was a soon-to-be college sophomore and I was a soon-to-be high school junior), so while we knew things about each other, we really didn’t know each other on a really personal level. We had seen each other semi-frequently over the years (more frequently as I – ahem – got a driver’s license, car, high school diploma and became a legal adult, in that order), but in the winter of 1999, things started to take an interesting turn – meaning that we started taking an interest in each other.

Let it be stated that I made the first move and asked him out (with the cheering squad of Friend, Doc, and A. in the background).

It was the only sunny Saturday in April in Seattle that year. We started the morning early with breakfast at a muffin shop at University Village (sadly, it is no longer there), where we kind of hashed out the important details (did we want to date each other? Yes.) quickly. Then, we went to the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Seattle Center via the monorail, and spent a good chunk of the day there. It was there, by the Japanese pagoda, that, as the Webmaster claims, that he tried to hug me and my face got in the way, so he kissed me instead. We spent the rest of the afternoon talking by the fountain. Then we took the monorail back and went into Redmond, discovered a wonderful Japanese restaurant/sushi bar (which we still go back to every once in a while – it’s a little place with great food), and then went to a late showing of The Matrix, which had just come out and I wanted to see it. He had already seen it but was more than willing to see it again. As he has said since, how many girls would want to see The Matrix on a first date? He knew I was a keeper.

Seven years later, we’ve been married for nearly six years, have two children, one mortgage, and a lot of wonderful memories. And every time I see The Matrix, it all comes back to me.

Yeah, I’ve used that “I’m going to hug you but, now that you’re closer, I might as well kiss you” excuse before.

    Smooooooth Webmaster!

Interesting, you and Webmaster starting dating in April and so did Little Cousin’s Mommy and myself (April 9th, 2004 Good Friday). Interesting how these little things happen at the same time, though April is in Spring. Congratulations though seven years of putting up with webmaster; Little Cousin’s Mommy is working on two years of putting up with me.
