The book meme

Fellow blogger (and fellow Deanna!) Domestic Chicky did this meme on Monday, and it looked so good that I decided to give it a try, too…

1. One book that changed your life: Other than the Bible, I would have to say Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts by Les and Leslie Parrott. The Webmaster and I attended a seminar hosted by them before we got married and purchased this book. They are both professors at Seattle Pacific University. While this book didn’t prevent us from going through some hard times as newlyweds, it did help us in avoiding a lot of petty stuff and needless arguments.

2. One book that you’ve read more than once: I Don’t Know How She Does It by Allison Pearson. It is the best book that I have read recently – and it’s still up on my sidebar at the moment!

3. One book that you’d want on a desert island: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. It’s got everything in it – wit, intrigue, sparkling dialogue, and a happy ending. This is quite possibly my favorite book of all time.

4. One book that made you laugh: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding. I loved the first book, too, but I just like this one better. Jude’s wedding makes me crack up every time I read it.

5. One book that made you cry: Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. I read it for the first time as a 5th or 6th grader, and I bawled my eyes out at the end. I dare anyone to get through this book without tearing up. Just try it.

6. One book that you wish you had written: Any of the Harry Potter books. I aspire to be at least half as entertaining and compelling a children’s author as J.K. Rowling has managed to be.

7. One book you wish had never been written: Splinter of the Mind’s Eye by Alan Dean Foster. That this book is even still available to purchase is a crime. This was the very first Star Wars novel written, and it was published before The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980. It’s supposed to take place between the two movies. There is just a leetle too much of Luke and Leia, um, not acting like brother and sister being inferred. Plus Luke supposedly defeats Vader in a lightsaber fight. Um, no. The Lucasfilm people have made a heroic effort to bring the story into the Star Wars canon. Why did they even bother? Gah. Run away!

8. One book that you are reading at the moment: Culture Warrior by Bill O’Reilly. Say what you want, the man makes you think.

9. One book that you’ve been meaning to read: Betrayal by Aaron Allston. I’m just waiting for it to come out in paperback, because my Star Wars book collection is bad enough without adding hardcover books to it. The same thing goes for my Star Trek book collection – can only buy paperbacks, and even then, the Webmaster rolls his eyes and asks me where I’m going to put it.

If anyone else wants to give this one a whirl, I’ll come read it! Just leave me a note in the comments.

I remember being so excited when I discovered Splinter in the library when I was a tiny little DozeyMagz. Now, it’s like Highlander 2 – it just should never have happened and we just don’t talk about it! (OK I still have a copy, but that’s because I must. You know what I mean!)
