Ane Speaks – Honor thy mother

Ane is obsessed with knowing who is “in charge.”

For example, she knows that I am in charge of her.  Following that logic, Grandma is in charge of me.  (It should be noted that Grandma fully endorses this logic.)

So recently, Ane asked me, “Mom, who is in charge of Grandma?  Great-Grandma?”

“Well,” I replied, “Great-Grandma is her mother, but when you become an adult, sweetie, the only person ‘in charge’ of you is God.  You become responsible for yourself.  Now, we still have to honor our parents and listen to what they have to say, like I listen to Grandma and Gichan, but since I am a grown-up, I don’t have to obey them the way that you have to obey me.”

Ane thought about this, then asked, “So, I have to obey you until I’m grown-up?”

“Yes.”

She sighed loudly.  “This honoring thing is hard.”

Unless you grow up and get married. Then your husband is in charge.
