Christmas 2015 Recap: Part 3
We finally got to Grandma and Gichan’s – late. As a result, Ane owes Gichan a batch of chocolate chip cookies. (They had a bet going.)
The kids eagerly dove into their stockings, and then into brunch.
Then they dove in under the tree, but Thumper, despite smiles here and there, wasn’t feeling his best. He had been fighting a fever for the past few days, and had just started coughing.
But we enjoyed the present opening…
… even if some of us were not impressed with our siblings’ gifts.
Best photobomb ever, there, Thumper.
He was in love with his new hoodie, though.
But by the time present opening was over, everyone was ready to wind down for a while. Rerun and Thumper ended up taking naps. But Thumper’s nap (sleeping on me) was restless, and his cough was a seal-like bark. The Webmaster and I finally decided to take him to urgent care, just to get him checked out. So we left the three older kids with Grandma, Gichan, and Auntie, and drove off to the closest Seattle Children’s urgent care clinic.
It was surprisingly quiet at the clinic, and we didn’t have to wait long to be seen. After a quick check of ears and lungs, we got a diagnosis – croup. What a Christmas present! Thumper was given oral steroids to reduce the swelling in his throat, and we were sent on our way. But while we were there, we got a text from Auntie – Rerun was now blazing like the Human Torch with a fever. Yup, he was coming down with croup as well. Yippee skippy.
We got back in time to enjoy dinner, and our present-opening time with Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa.
But when it was over, the little boys were exhausted, and it was time to head home.
Fortunately, Thumper’s fever broke overnight, and Rerun was manageable enough the next morning to carry on with our plan to go see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at a sensory friendly showing, joined by Nana and Papa. We then opened presents with them after the movie and lunch out at Red Robin. I’m glad to report that both the little boys are doing much better now. Rerun’s fever did not last long. I was told the cough could take a week or two to end, and both of the boys are suffering from the other side effect of croup – laryngitis. They both sound like 50 year old smokers (which is both pathetic and amusing). Thumper is also missing the upper part of his vocal register, which means his screams have been pleasantly silent, instead of the ear-piercing glass-shattering octave that he can usually hit. The reprieve has been nice, but I’ll be happy when they both sound like themselves again.

Ane bet Dad that you guys would be on time? I should’ve gotten in on that pool, then she’d owe me cookies, too!
